In our Christmas Catalogue, we’ve curated a collection of game that make the perfect Christmas gift, complete with staff recommendations! We didn’t have much room to get into it, but now you can read what games we think make the best Christmas gift and why, from all over the Good Games family!

The MinD

JASON FROM MARKETING

The Mind is easily my number 1 game of all time. I love teaching this to new players and playing it feels like a magic trick as you psychically link up to play the right cards! One of my fondest gaming memories is playing this at a bar in Helsinki at the KLASK World Championships. The game is the perfect icebreaker to make new friends from across the other side of the world!

Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right

RONSTAN FROM CUSTOMER SERVICE

My personal staff pick is “Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right”. Root is a terrifically designed asymmetrical war game, which pits different factions of woodland creatures against each other as they vie for control of the woods. I love Root so much particularly due to the synergy between game mechanics and game design. For example, the game plan of my favourite faction, the Eyrie Dynasty (birds!), revolves around cycling political leaders and building “roosts”, rewarding carefully planned gameplay while letting other factions exploit their periods of political turmoil to gain advantage. My favourite memory of playing Root is when I was about to win as Eyrie Dynasty and I got stuck in a loop of political turmoil which let the player playing the Woodland Alliance (a guerilla rebel force) take me out of the game. It felt super flavourful and was really exciting.

Bark Avenue

Mat Edwards from Town Hall

The adorable theme caught the attention of my wife and I, which only got better as we dove in. The whole game revolves around being a successful dog-walker as you travel New York city picking up furry companions. I love how they all have favourite activities and their owners will literally give you money if the dog poops! I remember the first time we played through the game, we couldn’t stop looking through all the cute dog cards that are actually based on real-life foster dogs across the United States!

Spirit Island

ROSS FROM CASTLE HILL

Co-op games are my jam, and this is by far the best one! I lovingly refer to this game as “Anti-Catan” as instead of playing as settlers racing against each other to establish yourself on the island, you instead play as nature spirits working together to drive out the invading settlers. My fondest memory of this game is when my wife and I got very close to losing once, and managed to find a clever combo which managed to turn it around and result in our victory. This game has so much content for you to enjoy, from a variety of distinct spirits to play as to different scenarios that you can play through, and plenty of expansions for when you fall in love with it too!

Surf’s UP

Kiddy from marketing

Perfect for beginners and casual gamers like me, it’s a light, laugh-out-loud game that’s easy to play but packed with fun. I played for the first time at CanCon 2024, before it was even released, and I was so impressed by how fast it was to learn! Players use their limited hand of energy cards (numbered 0 – 5) to bid on waves, trying to score the most points. But there’s a twist: if two players bid the same energy, they both wipe out and lose the wave. Win a wave, and you lose that energy card for the rest of the game, adding strategic depth to the simple mechanics. The result? A hilarious mix of tension and table banter as you roast a mate for the audacity of playing the same amount of energy as you and wiping you both out! With its vibrant design, a neoprene playmat, and a price under $40, Surf’s Up is honestly such a great gift pick!

Well, any of these games catch your eye? You can grab the perfect Christmas gift and many more over on our ultimate gift guide!

A darling first look at Azurite Sea – Michael Darling Lorcana TCG Spoiler Card

We’re proud to show off Good Games’ very first Disney Lorcana Azurite Sea exclusive spoiler card: Michael Darling – Playful Swordsman.

Dipping out of Peter Pan’s Neverland to make his appearance in Azurite Sea, Michael wields his wooden sword bravely, ready to take on any adversaries from The Jolly Roger! While he’s just a common, Michael will be a pretty reliable card for Ruby players. As a one-drop, with 2 Strength and Willpower, Michael won’t be as easily taken down. Top that off with being inkable and the ability to gain 1 Lore, he is sure to become a welcome addition for Ruby players!

Disney Lorcana Azurite Spoiler Card - Michael Darling Playful Swordsman Card

Ability-wise, this spoiler card is pretty on par with the trusty Sergeant Tibbs – Courageous Cat from The First Chapter. The only difference is that Michael has the Pirate classification opening the way to some fun combos with other potential cards.

Disney Lorcana The First Chapter Sergeant Tibbs Courageous Cat Card

Ahoy! New combos for Pirate Cards

So far, as the set name suggests, Azurite Sea will have huge potential for nautical combos. As more spoiler cards trickle out we’ll be able to see what potential there is for Michael Darling to gain edge over Sergeant Tibbs!

If you decide to build a Pirate Deck, Jim Hawkins Honorable Pirate helps amp up card drawing if you have a solid amount of Pirates in your deck. It’s great to see that as Disney Lorcana grows its card database, we’re finally seeing card classifications come into use more.

Azurite Sea Jim Hawkins Honorable Pirate Card

Azurite Sea will be available at most Good Game stores on 15 November, and everywhere else 22 November 2024. Stock levels for Disney Lorcana have improved drastically in Australia, but secure your boosters by preordering. You can do so by preordering online or at your local Good Games store!

Cycle Nine ‒ 16 November 2024 to 23 March 2o25

ANZ Cycle Nine is here! The ANZ Magic Super Series is a program for Magic The Gathering for the Australian and New Zealand region. Each year is a Season made up of three Cycles with Store Qualifiers that any WPN Location in Australia or New Zealand can register and be a part of. Players can enter as many Store Qualifiers as they wish and the winner of each Store Qualifier will then qualify for that Cycle’s Super Series Final. Top Finishers in each Super Series Final will win invites to the Pro Tour and cash prizes.

Each registered store will be able to run two Store Qualifiers and must be run within the date window provided and will have its own entry fees and prizes (set by each store.) The winner of a Store Qualifier will then qualify for the Super Series Final for that season. Some stores may combine their allotment of Qualifiers to make bigger events, so check with your store for details.

WPN Premium Stores will be able to run four Store Qualifiers within the date window and each event will qualify the winner and the runner up for the Super Series Final.

Players can also continue to play in Store Qualifiers after they have already qualified and should they qualify again, that qualification will pass down to the next ranked player in that event.

Cycle Nine Dates and Formats

  • Store Qualifiers: November 16th to March 23, 2025
    • Check with your local store for dates and formats.
      • Stores can run TWO Store Qualifiers.

Swiss Rounds and Playoffs

Store Qualifiers must be run under the following tournament rules. It is important to note that if you choose to run Sealed Format, then there should be a Top 8 Booster Draft for events with more than 8 players. This may inflate the entry fee for sealed events.

Minimum 8 Players 3 Rounds Single Elimination No Playoffs
9-16 Players 5 Rounds Swiss Top 4 Playoffs
17-32 Players 5 Rounds Swiss Top 8 Playoffs
33-64 Players 6 Rounds Swiss Top 8 Playoffs

STORE QUALIFIER PROMOS

In addition to any prizes each store might add to their prize pool, there are some great promos that we will be sending out to stores to give out as prizes!

Participation card

This is limited to 32 per Store Qualifier, stores will determine how they hand these out so make sure you check with your store on how to get one!

A Lorcana Store Championship is your chance to show off your skills and crown yourself as a proper Illumineer! So join a Lorcana Store Champion! Register today!

What’s a Lorcana STORE CHAMPIONSHIP?

Lorcana Store Championships are tournaments that happen at select local games stores, including Good Games, where players from all around come in and compete with their constructed (pre-built) Lorcana decks.

If you’ve wanted to see where your skills stack up against the other Lorcana players in your community, this is the place to be.

Is your deck ready? Shop for the cards you need over on our singles page to build your deck to championship perfection!

HOW COMPETITIVE IS A STORE CHAMPIONSHIP?

It’s different from store to store, but it’s safe to say that these are more casual than a world championship, but more competitive than your weekly event. That’s because these happen only once per store with the release of a new set, with prizes you can’t get anywhere else.

Prizes? What Prizes?

The Top 8 Players get promo cards exclusive to this set release. Plus, the top two players get a one-of-a-kind playmat (with the #1 getting the CHAMPION playmat of course.)

Plus, stores usually give out extra boosters for additional prizing. Good Games stores usually give away additional prizes based on where you rank, so make sure to do your best!

Lorcana Store Champ Prizes

Excited? Register now at your nearest participating Good Games!

I’M IN! WHAT DO I NEED?

To play in a Lorcana Store Championship all you need is a deck of Lorcana TCG cards.

What’s in a deck?

Here are the basic rules for building a Lorcana deck.

  • Minimum 60-card deck:
You can go over 60, but I don’t recommend it unless you know exactly what you’re doing.
  • Maximum of 4 copies per card:
Cards like 99 Dalmatians are the exemption!
  • Maximum of 2 ink colours:
Find the best combination that works for your strategy.

From there, you can build whatever kind of deck you want. It helps to look up strategies online to see what others are doing, and see if they work for you (or how you can beat them!)

You’ll also need to create a Deck List. For official tournaments, you’ll have to fill out a form like this. Just list out the cards that’s in your deck and how many. Give it a cool name too!

Lorcana Deck List

Anything else?

Create an account at melee.gg. This is the software Good Games uses to create match ups and track your performance throughout the event.

At the STORE

After you sign up, you’ll then be matched up against your first opponent via the Melee software. You’ll determine who goes first (high dice rolls are the most usual way) and start!

Each round is called a Swiss Round where you and your opponents have 55 minutes in a best of 3 matchup. If all the players finish their matchups before the 55 minutes are up, then the next round can already start.

The length of a tournament varies depending on how many players there are. Every store championship needs at least 8 players to run. For example, with 8 players = 3 Swiss Rounds. (4 rounds for 9-16 players, 5 rounds for 17-32 players, and so on.) With each round being almost as long as an hour, I recommend blocking off quite a bit of time (and having some snacks) at your Lorcana Store Championship.
